Scholarship Description

• Course Level: Fellowships are available to pursue research.
• Study Subject: The fellowship is intended for individuals returning to research in any STEM subject within the following faculties:

1. Engineering
2. Science
3. Medicine and Health Science

• Scholarship Award: Daphne Jackson Fellowships cover your salary but do not provide bench fees and consumables. This is expected to be met by the host organisation and low-cost projects are encouraged such as computer modelling. Occasionally some advertised sponsored Fellowships may provide some money towards consumables. In addition to the salary, each Fellow is given £1500 per year towards their extraordinary expenses which would include retraining costs such as conference registration, learned society membership and travel costs to training courses.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

Daphne Jackson Fellowships are unique. They offer STEM professionals wishing to return to a research career after a break of two or more years, the opportunity to balance an individually tailored retraining programme with a challenging research project in a suitably supportive environment.

Daphne Jackson Fellowships are retraining fellowships for women and men who have taken a break of two years or more from STEM research for family, caring or health reasons.

Requirements for all candidates

The application process for a Daphne Jackson Fellowship is competitive. Individuals wishing to be considered for a Fellowship must meet the following criteria:

• A career break of at least two years’ duration, taken for family, health or caring reasons
• A good first degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) subject
• A PhD, or at least three years of research experience (academic or industrial) prior to the career break (with evidence of scholarly outputs)
• UK residency status/right to remain in the UK indefinitely and based in the UK on application
• Good command of English (spoken and written)
• Good computer skills

Your application will be stronger if you also have postdoctoral experience and peer-reviewed publications.

You may return to work during your career break, however, this must not include:

• Lecturing to degree level that takes up more than 0.5 FTE
• Paid research that could lead to publications
• Studying for MSc in a field related to your Fellowship as this would be considered to be retraining

English Language Requirements: Applicants must have Good command of English (spoken and written). To maximize your chances of obtaining a Fellowship, you must be able to speak and write English fluently. It is advisable to obtain some lessons to improve your language skills if your English is not fluent.
