The University of KwathZulu-Natal offers Emma Smith Overseas Scholarship for pursuing a graduate degree program. This is open to female graduates of any South African university.

The University of KwathZulu-Natal is a multi-campus, residential, teaching and research-led university located in the picturesque province of KwaZulu-Natal. The university has a proud and rich heritage of academic excellence.

Its policy on English language proficiency requires that applicants demonstrate at least one of the following levels of proficiency in English: A pass in an examination equivalent to Level 4 or higher In English as Home or FAL in the South African NSC  examination or English at Higher Grade (First or Second language) at South African Senior Certificate level (Matriculation).

Eligibility

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for this scholarship:-

  • This is open to female graduates of any South African university who have been resident or who have had a permanent home in Durban (inclusive of metro boundaries) for a period of at least three years immediately preceding the award.
  • These are available for pursuing a graduate degree program.
  • These are awarded to learn any of the courses offered by the university.
  • South African citizens are eligible to apply for this free study.
  • Have been a registered student at a South African University for at least two years
  • Be under the age of 25 years on January 1st of the year of the award, unless the Senate of the university determines otherwise.
  • Have completed at least a four-year curriculum
  • In making the award, preference will normally be given to candidates who, at the date of the award, have completed a five-year curriculum.
  • This will be tenable for two years.
  • The value of the determined from time to time by the university.
  • A scholar shall not hold any other bursary or any paid appointment concurrently with the Emma Smith Overseas except with the permission of Senate.
  • The holder of the Emma Smith Overseas must, during the tenure of the study, pursue advanced or post-graduate studies under such conditions as Senate may approve; and must satisfy Senate from time to time, as required, of her compliance with the said conditions, of her progress in her studies and her good conduct.
  • Except with the permission of the Senate of the university, a student to whom the Emma Smith Overseas is awarded must take up the tenure of the study within a period not exceeding 18 months from the date of the award.

  • Supporting Documents: To apply, students must be ready to submit the CV, Full Academic Record, Two Reference letters, attached proof of identity, letter of motivation.
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants must have an appropriate Bachelor’s degree or Admission to the status of that degree in terms of Rule GR7 (a) or Attained a level of competence as defined by rule GR7 (b)
    -A School/College may prescribe further criteria for admission to study
    -Some Schools/College may accept and Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma if HEQF (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met.
  • Language Requirements: The University of KwaZulu-Natal is an English-medium university. Its policy on English language proficiency requires that applicants demonstrate at least one of the following levels of proficiency in English
