Applicants need a good level of English language to study at Newcastle University. Applicants will need to provide a recognized English language test or qualification. This is usually a test score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, but requirements can vary between IELTS 6.0 to 8.0. All students need at least 5.5 in each sub-skill, or equivalent.

  • Course Level: Studentship is available for pursuing PhD programme at Newcastle University.
  • Study Subject: This studentship is available to someone with a strong background and a research focus in one of the following areas of Economics:
  • List of subjects: Applied econometrics
  • Applied microeconomics, including industrial, regional and public economics
  • Banking, empirical finance and risk management
  • Financial markets, insurance and behavioural finance
  • Health, risk, safety, environmental and experimental economics
  • Labour market economics and applications
  • Macroeconomics, trade, FDI and international economics.
  • Scholarship Award: The studentship will cover PhD fees at the home/UK rate and a level of subsistence equal to that provided by ESRC studentships (estimated rate of £14,057 in 2016/17).

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for this scholarship:
  • Applicants of UK/EU and International status can apply.
  • The holder of the studentship may have the opportunity to undertake a small amount of teaching within the School.
  • Payment for this will be at a standard hourly rate in addition to the annual studentship.
  • Applicants should have a good Honours degree (first-class or upper-second-class Honours) in an area related to the proposed field of study. It would be an advantage if applicants also had, or expected to receive by autumn 2016, a masters level qualification at ‘credit’ or ‘distinction’ level in a relevant subject area.
