Governor Kenny Guinn’s Millennium program in USA, 2015

Applications are invited for Nevada Millennium Scholarship available for high school graduates entering his/her senior or last year of college with 90 or more credits at an eligible institution. The studentships are awarded each year to two qualified Gov. Guinn Millennium Scholars, one each in Northern and Southern Nevada, who are majoring in elementary or secondary education with the intent of teaching in Nevada. The maximum annual award for the selected applicants, to the extent of available funding, will be in an amount not to exceed $4,500 each to pay the educational expenses of the recipient for the next school year. Applications are accepted each year in early February through April 1st.

Course Level: award is available for students entering his/her senior or last year of college at eligible institutions: the University of Nevada, Reno; University of Nevada Las Vegas; Great Basin College; Nevada State College;and Sierra Nevada College.

Eligibility: A Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Millennium Scholarship may be awarded to two students each year to supplement current Gov. Guinn Millennium Scholarship students who meet the following criteria:
-Must be an eligible Millennium Scholar with no strikes against his/her scholarship at the time of application;
-Must be entering his/her senior or last year of college with 90 or more credits at an eligible institution
-Be enrolled in and remain enrolled in a course of study leading to licensure in elementary or secondary education;
-Maintain a college grade point average of not less than 3.5 on a 4.0 grading scale;
-State a commitment to teaching in Nevada upon graduation; and
-Have a commendable record of community service.

Description:  In 1999, Governor Kenny Guinn’s Millennium award initiative was enacted into law by the Nevada Legislature. Section 396.911 of the Nevada Revised Statutes created the Millennium Scholarship Trust Fund to be administered by the State Treasurer. Later that year, the Nevada System of Higher Education’s Board of Regents adopted policy and procedure guidelines for the administration of the program. Through the successful completion of a rigorous program of study at Nevada high schools, our state has seen a significant, positive impact – more than double the number of students are attending our colleges and universities since the program began.

Number of award(s): A Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Millennium Scholarship may be awarded to two students each year.

Duration of award(s): The Millennium Scholarship benefits are paid before classes begin, or up to 4 weeks into the semester, depending on your institution’s payment schedule.

What does it cover? The maximum annual award for the selected applicants, to the extent of available funding, will be in an amount not to exceed $4,500 each to pay the educational expenses of the recipient for the next school year. The Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Millennium Scholarship must be used only for the payment of: registration fees and laboratory fees and expenses and to purchase required textbooks and course materials.

Selection Criteria: All applications will be reviewed by the State Treasurer’s office. Those which meet the eligibility criteria for the
Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Millennium support will be forwarded to an independent review committee. The review committee will make recommendations to the Board of Trustees of the College Savings Plans of Nevada (Board), which will consider, evaluate, and choose the recipient.

Notification: All applicants will be notified by mail as soon as possible after the Board has chosen a recipient.

How to Apply: Your school district will submit your name to the State Treasurer’s office if you are an eligible Millennium Scholar. There is no application form for you to complete. You will then receive an award packet from the State Treasurer’s Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship office identifying you as a Millennium Scholarship recipient. You must complete your “Acknowledgment of Award” information in order to receive your award.

Application Deadline: The form must be submitted prior to the end of the semester for which candidates are seeking funding. Applications are accepted each year in early February through April 1st.
