2023 Applications are now open for the Jockey Club Scholarship, the Jockey Club Vision Scholarship, the Jockey Club Advancement of Women in Racing Scholarship, the Jack Goodman Scholarship, and the Jockey Club Benevolence Scholarship.

The Jockey Club Scholarships have been established to encourage and support high-achieving candidates from the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico.

These five types of scholarships are available for students commencing full-time programs at a college, university, or trade program for the 2023-2024 academic year. All scholarships require a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation was founded in 1894. Jockey Club is a charitable trust which provides, on a confidential basis, financial relief and assistance to needy members of the Thoroughbred industry and their families.

Eligibility

• Eligible Countries: A resident of the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico.
• Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in any subject offered by the university
• Admissible Criteria: To be eligible for any of The Jockey Club’s scholarships, an individual must be a resident of the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico.
• Candidates can apply for all scholarships for which they are eligible; however, they can win only one scholarship per academic year.
• Awards are open to any equine breed or discipline; preference will be given to candidates with the expressed desire to secure employment in the Thoroughbred industry.
• For only The Jockey Club Benevolence Scholarship, preference will be given to family members of farm/backstretch workers. Applicants are not required to pursue a career in the equine or Thoroughbred industry.
• For the spring 2024 semester renewal of a scholarship, students must maintain a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (2.50-grade point average for the recipient of The Jockey Club Benevolence Scholarship) and full-time status at the college/university/program that the recipient was enrolled in for the fall 2023 semester.
• If selected to receive one of The Jockey Club’s scholarships, the recipient must provide The Jockey Club with proof of enrollment at a college/university/program for the 2022-2023 academic year.

The Jockey Club Scholarship

• Scholarship for students in the academic pursuit of majors for future employment in the equine industry. Open to any equine breed or discipline; preference will be given to candidates with the expressed desire to secure employment in the Thoroughbred industry.
• Open to undergraduates, and graduate students enrolled in a full-time program at a college or university.
• Minimum grade point average: 3.0

The Jockey Club Vision Scholarship

• Scholarship for a student from a minority racial or ethnic group: Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, American Indian or Native Alaskan, Asian, Hispanic or Latino, or Black or African American.
• Open to undergraduates, and graduate students enrolled in a full-time program at a college or university.
• Open to any equine breed or discipline; preference will be given to candidates with the expressed desire to secure employment in the Thoroughbred industry.
• Minimum grade point average: 3.0

The Jockey Club Advancement of Women in Racing Scholarship

• Open to women only.
• Open to undergraduates, and graduate students enrolled in a full-time program at a college or university.
• Open to any equine breed or discipline; preference will be given to candidates with the expressed desire to secure employment in the Thoroughbred industry.
• Minimum grade point average: 3.0

Jack Goodman Scholarship

• Scholarship for a student enrolled in the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program.
• Selection based on academic achievement, a proposed career path in the racing industry, and previous industry involvement.
• While incoming freshmen could be preferred, students in any class year or graduate students are eligible.
• Minimum grade point average: 3.0

The Jockey Club Benevolence Scholarship

• Scholarship to reduce financial hardship for a low-income student to enable attendance at a full-time program at a college, university, or trade program.
• Preference to backstretch and horse farm employees and their family members.
• Applicants are not required to pursue a career in the equine or Thoroughbred industries.
• Open to graduating high school seniors and undergraduates.
• Minimum grade point average: 2.5

• Supporting Documents: Forms, two letters of recommendation, proof of enrollment in a university for the 2023-2024 academic year, attach a copy of the Student Aid Report from FAFSA, and official or unofficial transcripts from your high school or university.
• Additional Requirements: All scholarships require a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
• Language Requirement: English skills are required.

Benefits

Awards are for one academic school year and paid per semester directly to the college/university; receivers must reapply every year.

Bursaries are usable only to cover the cost of tuition, books, and other expenses paid directly to colleges/universities in support of educational purposes during the semester.
