The Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government (Met Éireann) is awarding three research fellowships which will commence as soon as possible. Candidates should note that eligibility to compete is open to citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA).

Met Éireann, Ireland’s National Meteorological Service, is a line division of the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government and is the leading provider of weather information and related services in the State. Its mission is to monitor, analyse and predict Ireland’s weather and climate and to provide a range of high quality meteorological and related information to the public and to specific customers in, for example, the aviation and agricultural sectors. As a scientific and technical organisation, it strives to utilise the latest technological and scientific advances in order to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and accuracy of its forecasts.

  • Scholarship Award: Award value:
  1. NWP Postdoctoral Researcher in surface physics (Fixed term Contract):
  2. Pay: On appointment €45,358.00 per annum, after 1 year €46,427.00 per annum
  3. Postdoctoral Researcher in climate monitoring products (Fixed term Contract):
  4. Pay: On appointment €38,974.00 per annum, after 1 year €40,568.00 per annum
  5. WINDSURFER Postdoctoral Researcher (Fixed term Contract):
  6. Pay: On appointment €32,895 per annum, after 1 year €36,320 per annums
  • Nationality: Candidates should note that eligibility to compete is open to citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the Member States of the European Union along with Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
  • Number of Scholarships: Three fellowships are available.
  • Scholarship can be taken in Ireland

Eligibility for the Scholarship

Eligible Countries: Candidates should note that eligibility to compete is open to citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the Member States of the European Union along with Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

NWP Postdoctoral Researcher in surface physics (Fixed term Contract):

  1. a) ESSENTIAL for the job
  2. A PhD or equivalent experience in atmospheric sciences, physics, mathematics or a related discipline is required. Applicants who expect to receive a Ph.D. in 2019 will also be considered.
  3. Experience in running numerical weather prediction or surface models.
  4. Strong quantitative skills including data analysis.
  5. Strong programming skills.
  6. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  7. A proven track record in peer-reviewed publications.
  8. b) DESIRABLE (but not essential) for the job
  9. Postdoctoral research experience.
  10. Experience in using the SURFEX model.
  11. Evidence of creativity and capability of independent research.

Postdoctoral Researcher in climate monitoring products (Fixed term Contract):

  1. a) ESSENTIAL for the job
  2. A PhD or equivalent experience in atmospheric sciences, physics, mathematics or a related discipline is required. Applicants who expect to receive a Ph.D. in 2019 will also be considered.
  3. Experience in analysis and manipulation of climate observation data.
  4. Strong programming skills.
  5. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  6. b) DESIRABLE (but not essential) for the job
  7. A proven track record in peer-reviewed publications.
  8. Evidence of creativity and capability of independent research.

WINDSURFER Postdoctoral Researcher (Fixed term Contract):

  1. a) ESSENTIAL for the job
  2. A Ph.D. or equivalent experience in atmospheric sciences, physics, mathematics or a related discipline is required. Applicants who expect to receive a Ph.D. in 2019 will also be considered.
  3. Experience running regional or global numerical models.
  4. Strong quantitative skills including data analysis.
  5. Strong programming skills.
  6. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  7. b) DESIRABLE (but not essential) for the job
  8. A proven track record in peer-reviewed publications.
  9. Evidence of creativity and capability of independent research.

English Language Requirements: Applicants should have Effective oral and written communication skills.
