National Overseas Scholarship for Indian Students to Study Abroad

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is pleased to announce its 2023 National Overseas Scholarship Program. The scheme provides financial assistance to the SC candidates for pursuing Masters’s level courses and PhD courses abroad in Institutions/Universities accredited by the Government/authorized body of that country in any field of study.

The funding program is open to low-income Indian students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Landless Agricultural Labourers, and Traditional Artisans categories to obtain higher education.

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: India
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scheme scholarship is given for Master and PhD level courses only.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • The candidates should, however, apply for only such type of visa which requires them to return to India after pursuing their course abroad.
  • Candidates having an unconditional offer of admission to the top 500 ranked foreign Institutes/Universities as per the latest available QS rankings for the year 2023 only will be selected for grant scholarships during the first round of selection.
  • In order to be eligible for the scholarship, at least 60% marks or an equivalent grade in the qualifying examination would be required. In the case of PhD courses, the qualifying exam would be a Master’s Degree and for Master’s Degree courses, the qualifying examination would be Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Age: Not more than 35 (Thirty-Five) years, as on the first day of April for selection year.
  • The following target groups are eligible to apply under the Scheme:
  • (i) Scheduled Castes
  • (ii) Denotified Tribes
  • (iii) Traditional Artisans
  • (iv) Landless Agriculture Labourer
  • The Applicant for Master’s Degree courses abroad is required to provide the details of his/her graduation degree.
  • The candidate applying for PhD is required to provide the details of his/her Post Graduation degree.

How to Apply

Applicants can apply on the online portal only.

  • How to Apply: Applicant can refer to how to file the form documents available in the portal http://nosmsje.gov.in/. The detailed documents explained the documents required and other detail for filling out the form.
  • Supporting Documents: The candidates are required to submit their Aadhar Card on the NOS portal and make their own efforts in seeking admission in programs/ fields specified in the Scheme in the latest available top 500 QS ranking Institutions/Universities.

A – List of documents required at the application stage:

  • 10th Board Certificate
  • Caste Certificate
  • Photo
  • Scanned Signature
  • Current Address proof/Permanent Address Proof, in case different from current address
  • Qualifying Degree/Provisional Certificate
  • Mark sheet of qualifying examination
  • Valid Document regarding admission to Foreign University (Application, Registration, or Admission related document) (*).
  • Income documents of all family members
  • Employer’s NOC Certificate if the applicant is employed. Gap certificate in case there is a gap of more than 6 months after completing a qualifying degree.
  • ITR acceptance document.
  • Aadhar Card

B – In case of selection of the candidate, then issued Provisional Award Letter under the scheme of National Overseas Scholarship for SC, etc. The candidate applicant is required to submit the following:

  • Attestation form
  • Self-Declaration/Undertaking Regarding Total Annual Family Income.
  • Self-Declaration Regarding any Pending Case/No conviction of Offense.
  • Copy of Passport
  • Admission Requirements: The minimum 60% percentage of marks required to apply for this funding program. Selected candidates are required to themselves arrange for their admission to foreign accredited educational institutions/universities.
  • Language Requirement: English language skills are required to study abroad.

Benefits

There are 125 awards available as the following:

  • Scheduled Castes – 115
  • Denotified, Nomadic, and Semi-Nomadic Tribes – 06
  • Landless Agricultural Labourers and Traditional Artisans – 04

The duration of the scholarship is a maximum of 3 years for a Masters’s and a maximum of 4 years for PhD. Under the scheme the following assistance is provided:

  • Tuition Fees.
  • Maintenance allowance (US Dollars 15,400/- Annually except UK.Great Britain Pound 9,900/- Annually in the UK)
  • Contingency
  • Visa fees
  • Equipment allowance
  • Tuition Fee only and medical insurance premium
  • Air Passage by economy class as per scheme guidelines.
