Nelson City Council Waste Minimisation Grants for International Students in New Zealand

The Nelson City Council is launching its Waste Minimisation Grants for the academic session 2023/2024. The grants will provide funding for the said project. 

This funding scheme welcomes applications across all areas of waste minimization but is preferably interested in projects which avoid or reduce construction/demolition or food waste. Individuals, groups, or organisations from within New Zealand and beyond are eligible to participate. Funds of up to $10,000 can be provided. However, $2,000 to $5,000 is the nominal range of awards, depending on the projects selected.

Nelson City Council is one of the only six Unitary Authorities in New Zealand. The council provides both territorial and regional services for Nelson City which covers a land area of 422km 2. It is the local government for Nelson. The city of Nelson borders the Tasman and Marlborough Districts.

The Nelson City Council, the local government, has two important tasks, to make possible democratic local decision-making and action and play a significant role in meeting the current and future needs for communities in order to provide them with good-quality local infrastructure, local public services, and performance of regulatory functions.

  • Supporting Documents: The applicants are required to prepare research projects that contain the following information: 
  • Where does the project fit in the waste hierarchy of rethink/avoid (high), reduce, reuse, and recycle (low)?
  • What does success look like for your project, and how will it be measured?
  • What is your ability/track record and capacity to deliver the project?
  • Will the project result in either a new activity or a significant expansion of an existing activity outside of ‘business as usual?
  • Will the project be of benefit to the Nelson region?
  • Admission Requirements: The applicants must have projects prepared as per the theme of the grant, i.e. waste minimization. 
  • Language Requirement: The candidates must be fluent in English or any other language, as and if applicable. 

Benefits

The candidates, groups, or organizations selected by the Nelson City Council to be awarded this grant can expect to receive $2,000 to $10,000 to support and fund projects focused on waste minimisation.
