28 Connect EDGE Postdoctoral Fellowships for International Students in Ireland, 2019

Applications are now open for EDGE Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowships for postdoctoral candidates wishing to relocate to Ireland, establish a more permanent base here or return after working overseas. Applicants of all nationalities are eligible to apply.

EDGE welcome applications from candidates who have had career breaks and are looking to return to a research-based career and from candidates who have had a non-traditional career path including those who have built up research experience but who may not have a PhD.

EDGE is Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND Action, led by Trinity College Dublin on behalf of a group of academic institutions from across Ireland. EDGE will offer 71 prestigious Fellowships for experienced researchers (post-doctoral or equivalent) relocating to Ireland over two calls for proposals. EDGE is also a training and development programme for scientific excellence, offering a unique combination of interdisciplinary research themes, career development opportunities and industry engagement to the community of Fellows we recruit.

Scholarship Description:

  • Applications Deadline: November 1, 2018
  • Course Level: Fellowships are available to pursue Postdoctoral programme.
  • Study Subject: The proposal should relate to the broad area of Information and Communications Technology, which covers materials, systems and data. This will ensure it falls within one of the three themes of the Programme (Digital Content Innovations, Advanced Materials and BioEngineering or Future Networks and Communications) from which you should select one of the given research sub-fields. The specific topic of the proposal should fall within the research expertise of your chosen Supervisor. EDGE invites proposals across the Information Communication Technology domain, under 3 themes:

  • Scholarship Award: Each Fellowship will be awarded such that their employer (an Irish Higher Education Institute) could offer a yearly gross salary (i.e. before employee tax and statutory deductions) in a range between €33,500 and €56,600, depending on the level of Fellowship – for more details please go to the Guide for Applicants. The precise amount may vary a little above or below this, depending on conditions of the employing institute – for information on the total award amount before all deductions, see the Terms and Conditions. Additionally, each Fellow will also receive as part of their annual salary, a mobility allowance of €6,500 to compensate for the requirement to move to Ireland, and if eligible, a family allowance of €5,400 if applicable. The Fellowship will also fund the host institute to support research costs of €13,000 to Fellows in the Advanced Materials and BioEngineering theme and €7,200 to Fellows in either the Digital Content Innovations or Future Networks and Communications themes.

  • Must comply with the Transnational Mobility Rule: at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Ireland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date: April 3rd 2017 (First Call). Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account
  • Must be Experienced Researchers as per the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions definition: at the time of recruitment, applicants must be in possession of a doctoral degree or, if the applicant has/does not have a doctoral degree, they should have at least 4 years of full-time equivalent research experience (Full-Time Equivalent Research Experience is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree which would allow them to pursue a PhD)
  • Must, in addition, at the time of recruitment, either:
    1. Have less than 4 years’ additional postdoctoral research experience to be eligible for a Level 1 fellowship
    2. Have 4 or more years’ additional postdoctoral research experience to be eligible for a Level 2 fellowship
    3. Have 6 or more years’ additional postdoctoral research experience to be eligible for a Level 3 fellowship

The additional postdoc experience is full time, measured from the date that the PhD was secured through the successful defence, or from when the 4-year full-time equivalence was obtained.

PhD Scholarship in Digital Media Research at University of Copenhagen in Denmark, 2019

ICSSR Doctoral, Postdoctoral and Senior Fellowships for Indian Scholars in India, 2018-19

The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) is calling applications for doctoral, postdoctoral senior fellowships for 2018-2019. Fellowship is available for Indian scholars.

The main objective of ICSSR Postdoctoral Fellowship is to encourage and retain young Indian social science scholars who have completed their PhD and who wish to pursue a regular career in teaching and research. Senior Fellowships are awarded to outstanding Indian Social Scientists for conducting full-time research on themes and issues of national and social concerns.

Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) was established in the year of 1969 by the Government of India to promote research in social sciences in the country. The Council aims to review the progress of social science research and give advice to its users.

Scholarship Description: 

  • Applications Deadline: Last date for online submission of applications is August 14, 2018, and a hard copy of the same should reach ICSSR latest by 21st August 2018.
  • Course Level: Fellowships are available to pursue Doctoral, Postdoctoral and Senior Fellowship.
  • Study Subject: The proposals should be in the field of social science disciplines or may be interdisciplinary in nature.
  • Scholarship Award: Doctoral Fellowships:

A) Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellowship

  • Doctoral Fellowship is a full-time research work.
  • The duration of the fellowship is strictly for two years.
  • The value of the fellowship is Rs.16,000/- p.m. and contingency grant is Rs.15,000 /-p.a.

B) Institutional Doctoral Fellowship

The duration and value of fellowship will be the same as mentioned under the Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellowship.

C) Short-Term Doctoral Fellowship

  • The duration of the Short Term Doctoral Fellowship is strictly for six months.
  • The value of fellowship is Rs.16,000/- per month plus Contingency Grant of Rs.7,500 /- for the duration of the Fellowship.

D) Contingency Grant

This is a one-time grant not exceeding Rs. 50,000/-.

Postdoctoral Fellowship: The value of the fellowship is Rs.28,000 p.m. and contingency grant is Rs.20,000/-p.a.

Senior Fellowships: The value of the fellowship for unemployed and superannuated scholars is Rs.40, 000 p.m. and contingency grant is Rs.40, 000/-p.a. irrespective of the pensionary benefit.

Doctoral Fellowships:

A) Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellowship

3.1 The candidates must have confirmed PhD registration (Research Degree Committee (RDC) approved) at any of the institutions mentioned at 1.1 above on the last date of application.

3.2 Minimum 50% marks in Graduation and 55% in Post-Graduation or equivalent grades in any Social Science disciplines. Five per cent (5%) relaxation of marks will be given to the SC/ST candidates;

3.3 NET/SLET/M Phil from a recognized university or the candidates who are registered after qualifying Research Entrance Test (RET) conducted by a university;

3.4 The scholar should not be more than 40 years of age on the last date of application. There shall be an age relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/Persons with benchmark disability candidates;

3.5 Candidates who have already availed UGC Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)/Rajiv Gandhi Doctoral Fellowship (RGDF)/ Maulana Azad Doctoral Fellowship (MADF)/ICSSR/ICAR/CSIR/ ICPR/ICMR/ICHR awardees are not eligible to apply.

B) Institutional Doctoral Fellowship

3.6 All conditions of the Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellowship (3.1 to 3.5) would apply to Institutional Doctoral Fellowship, which is administered through the ICSSR Research Institutes.

C) Short Term Fellowship

3.7 A doctoral student who has not availed ICSSR or any other fellowship (refer 3.5 above) and completed at least two years of research work for Ph. D. Degree at any of the institutions mentioned at 1.1 above is eligible to apply for Short-term Fellowship.

D) Contingency Grant

3.8 This is a one-time grant awarded to a registered Ph. D. scholar at any of the institutions mentioned at 1.1 above, who is at an advanced stage of his/her research work, and not availed ICSSR or any other fellowship (refer 3.5 above) is eligible to apply for Contingency Grant for the purpose of field trip, stationery and computer-related expenses.

Postdoctoral Fellowship:

2.1 The scholar should not be more than 45 years of age on the last date of application. There shall be an age relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/Persons with Benchmark Disability candidates;

2.2 The scholar must possess a PhD degree in any of the social science disciplines at the time of application.

2.3 A fellow is required to affiliate himself/herself to an ICSSR Research Institute/ institutes of national importance as approved by MHRD/ government research institutes/ UGC recognized Indian university including deemed university/college having approved PhD programme and requisite research infrastructure of his/her choice. Funds are disbursed through the affiliating/administering institution.

2.4 Faculties with regular service in publicly funded universities/colleges and research institutes getting UGC pay-scales may be considered for pay protection in exceptionally meritorious cases to be decided by the Expert Committees of the ICSSR.

2.5 The selected fellow has to work under the guidance of a senior social scientist (not below Associate Professor with sufficient research supervision, experience and publications). The supervisor should not be superannuated and be in employment at the affiliating institution in the same discipline as that of the applicant. In the case of inter-disciplinary proposals, the supervisor should have proven expertise in the area of research proposed by the scholar. The selection of the supervisor is subject to the approval of the ICSSR.

Senior Fellowships:

2.1 The scholar should not be less than 45 and more than 70 years of age on the last date of application.

2.2 The scholar must possess a PhD degree in any of the social science disciplines with outstanding research publications at the time of application.

2.3 Senior government and defence officers (not less than 25 years of regular service) and persons with proven Social Science expertise possessing a Ph. D. degree in any social science disciplines and demonstrable research experience through publications of books/research papers/reports can also apply.

2.4 A fellow is required to affiliate himself/ herself to an ICSSR Research Institute/ institutes of national importance as approved by MHRD/ government research institute/ UGC recognized Indian university including deemed university of his/her choice. Funds are disbursed through the affiliating/administering institution.

2.5 Faculties with regular service in publicly funded universities/colleges and research institutes getting UGC pay-scales may be considered for pay protection in exceptionally meritorious cases to be decided by the Expert Committees of the ICSSR.

OKP & MSP Scholarships for International Students in Netherlands, 2019

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides OKP and MSP scholarships for the RNTC courses for media and communications professionals from a variety of partner countries.

Administered by Nuffic, the Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education, these scholarships are open to international students.

The RNTC training center provides training for media professionals from all over the world: from journalists and programme-makers to social activists and communications professionals from non-governmental organizations.

Scholarship Description:

  • Course Level: Scholarships are available for Media and communication professionals.

In all other cases, they may ask for a certified statement from a recognized authority establishing your proficiency in spoken and written English. The required level of your command of English should be equivalent to a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 79-80 (internet-based) or 213 (computer-based), and 6 for IELTS. The amount of the scholarship is increased for research activities abroad by a maximum of 50% for a total period specified in Tables 1-10, unless additional financial resources are available. In any case, the increase is due only for periods of continuous stay and not less than sixty days.
  5. The scholarship cannot be allocated to those who have already received a scholarship to attend another PhD course or an equivalent course.
  6. The scholarship cannot be combined with research grants or other scholarships awarded for any purpose, except those awarded by national or foreign institutions useful to integrate with the stay abroad the research activity of the PhD students.
  7. Scholarships funded by “external institutions” and associated location are awarded upon the successful completion of the conditions set out in the act that regulates its funding.

  1. Applicants of any nationality may apply for participation to the competition if they have one of the following qualifications at the expiration date of the call: a) “Laurea Specialistica” or “Laurea Magistrale” or “Laurea Vecchio ordinamento1 ” or second level academic degree comparable to them; b) foreign degree, issued by a foreign official institution, comparable in duration and level2 to the qualifications referred to in letter a), and in the foreign system allows the admission to PhD courses. Tables 1-10 specify for each PhD course the type of degree required for participation to the competition and any additional requirements.
  2. Applicants can participate if they obtain their qualifications referred to the paragraph 1 no later than October 31, 2018. Applicants who do not obtain the title by October 31, 2018, will be excluded. If applicants (with the title not yet obtained) appear to be winners, they will be admitted and enrolled with reserve and must certify their graduation in accordance with the procedure indicated in art. 5 paragraph 5 no later than November 2, 2018.
  3. All applicants are admitted to the competition on the condition that they meet the requirements of the notice. The University reserves the right to carry out sample checks3 and may exclude applicants at any time from the selection process if they fail to meet the requirements as set out in the present article even after the PhD courses have already begun.

Fully Funded Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Media Fellowships for South African Journalists, 2018

­For the first time, MSF Southern Africa and MSF India are offering MSF Southern Africa / India Media Fellowship for the year 2018. These projects have focused primarily on HIV/TB, healthcare for mobile and migrant populations, and treating the consequences of sexual and gender-based violence.

The MSF Media Fellowship aims at building or strengthening rapport with the media stakeholders in South Africa and to promote a greater practical understanding of issues surrounding access to essential medicines related to ongoing reforms in intellectual property legislation.

They are Doctors Without Borders (MSF). They don’t care how long it took to get here – they care about using every second to save a life. They help people worldwide where the need is greatest, delivering emergency medical aid to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare.

How to Apply: Send us your application, by email only, to journalist-grant-at-siwi.org, no later than Monday 30 April 2018. The application must be in English and include the following:

  • Attachments containing scans of, or functioning links to three articles/pieces on water or water-related issues, published in the past three years (2015-2018).
  • A brief CV
  • A motivation letter (why you want to visit and cover World Water Week) of maximum 400 words
  • We will notify grant winners in early June 2018.
